Night Flight to the Sun
Despite expectations,
it was dark—
we all knew what we were flying into.
Fire,
gamma rays,
a slow boil into oblivion.
The curiosity that kills so hard
you won’t even get your
bones in Earth’s dirt.
They’ll use descriptions like
brave pioneers, frontiers persons—
colloquially, Sun Heroes.
For me, it was a roast to end the misery,
or the unbearable beauty,
I never determined.

Montgomery Maxton (he/him) is a poet, writer, photographer, and mixed-media artist from Cincinnati. His fourth book of poetry, Shipwreck, is forthcoming in September 2021 from Moon Ice Press. He is currently working on a new novel. He lives in New York City.
